Intestinal health has a lot to do with what you eat. To take care of your intestines, you need to keep an eye on what you eat. The first thing to do is rely on probiotics. These bacteria improve intestinal flora and boost the immune system. To keep your intestines healthy, you should also avoid certain types of food, such as alcohol and fatty foods, which are detrimental to your general health and that of your intestines.

To preserve your intestines, you should also avoid certain types of food, such as alcohol and fatty foods, which are detrimental to your general health and that of your intestines. Other specific foods should be avoided. A number of studies have proven their harmful effects on the intestinal microbiota.

Processed pastries

Doughnuts, pain au chocolat and cakes... most are processed and too high in sugar. A study published in the journal « Nutriments » in 2020 demonstrated that consuming foods with too much sugar can promote imbalance in the intestinal microbiota.

Red meat

Red meat has often been criticized for its harmful effects on health. It may also contribute to an imbalance in intestinal flora. A study published in the journal « Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis and Vascular Biology » showed that daily consumption of red meat increased the risk of heart disease by around 22%. This was linked in particular to the way in which the gut microbiome was altered by red meat consumption.

Fried foods

A study published in the journal « Gut » revealed that fried foods reduce the levels of two bacterial species (faecalibacterium and blautia), both of which are beneficial to intestinal health.  Rich in trans-fatty acids, fried foods love to fight with the insides and often lead to inflammation or exacerbation of irritable bowel syndrome symptoms.

Processed meats

Processed meats are bad for your health, and your intestines are no exception. A study published in the journal « Clinical Nutrition » has established a link between total fat intake, particularly saturated fats, and a reduction in the total number of bacteria present in the intestinal microbiota. These meats are thus associated with an imbalance in intestinal flora.

Sweetened fruit juices

Certain fruit juices, sometimes too rich in sugar, can be bad for the intestines. According to the journal « Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology », excess sugar in the diet harms intestinal health by causing inflammation. It throws intestinal bacteria out of balance and promotes symptoms such as bloating and diarrhea. That's why it's best to choose natural juices with no added sugar.
