Festive menus at the end of the year often include delicate wines, spirits, digestifs and alcoholic cocktails. However, it's important to note that alcohol can actually damage your health.
The
end-of-year festivities are often an opportunity to get together with family at
Christmas or to have a party with friends on the evening of 31 December. In both
cases, the ‘benefits’ of alcohol are much appreciated, as much for the extra
laughs as for the release of inhibitions and the daring to reach out to others.
But
while alcohol encourages sociability and increases joie de vivre, it can also
encourage verbal and physical aggression during the evening, not to mention the
fact that alcohol abuse is harmful to general health.
Alcohol
abuse is the third leading cause of death after cancer and cardiovascular
disease. Alcohol is implicated in around fifty diseases. It is responsible for
the development of cirrhosis, encephalopathy and cancers of the upper
aerodigestive tract, especially when alcohol and tobacco are combined. All organs are affected by alcohol abuse, the
brain and nervous system first. It is also responsible for a large number of
road accidents, accidents in the home, accidents at work and suicides, the
majority of which are facilitated by alcohol consumption at the time of the
act.
Obviously,
when taken occasionally, alcohol poses little danger to health. However, care
must be taken not to spoil what should be a warm and convivial moment. So
there's no reason to drink in moderation.
