The European Union delegation launched on Monday 24 October in Lomé, the European Climate Diplomacy Week. This 2022 edition, organised in partnership with the German and French representations in Togo, focuses particularly on the energy sector. It is based on the theme: "Energy savings, energy efficiency and the acceleration of renewable energies". Germany is therefore supporting Togo in its just transition to an ecologically sustainable, climate-protecting and climate-change friendly economy. The focus is on investments in renewable energy, vocational training and agriculture.

Promoting renewable energy

The European Climate Diplomacy Week 2022 in Togo was an opportunity for German cooperation to present its achievements in the field of solar irrigation, electromobility through electric motorbikes and tricycles as well as mini grids.  These innovations are realised through GIZ, in particular with the support of the project "Rural Electrification in Togo" (ProEnergie). ProEnergie, a project for rural electrification and the promotion of renewable energy.

In addition to these interventions, Togolese technicians receive training in order to acquire the skills to design, install and maintain such systems. This training component is supported by the "Programme for Sustainable Economic Development" (ProDED). The 40 kWp photovoltaic installation of the GIZ office in Togo was also presented.  In addition to this technical cooperation support, Germany is also contributing several tens of millions of euros to finance the rehabilitation of the Nangbéto hydroelectric power station, as well as projects to extend the electricity grids of Lomé and Togo's urban centres, through the KfW (PEREL and PERECUT projects with the EU and the AFD).

German commitment to climate protection and climate change adaptation

In Togo, thanks to the commendable efforts of the German government, the rehabilitation of the 64 MW Nangbéto hydroelectric power plant ensures the sustainable operation of the plant for the next 30 to 40 years and contributes to an annual saving of more than 100,000 tons of CO2. Support is given to the establishment of an advisory service of the Togolese Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Agency (AT2ER) for farmers and entrepreneurs who wish to use solar electricity productively (e.g. for irrigation, cooling and drying): "Renewable Energy Helpdesk".

Nearly 67,000 people have access to high-quality solar pumps and refrigerators and 114 villages have access to water supply through solar pumps. More than 3270 farmers can irrigate their fields thanks to the installation of more than 270 solar pump irrigation kits.  Nearly 74,000 agricultural units are supported in introducing climate-friendly innovations. More than 90% (of which nearly one third are women) are increasingly resilient to the effects of climate change as a result of our support to the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Rural Development. The establishment of a training and demonstration centre on solar irrigation in Sokodé/Tchamba.

As part of its national electrification strategy, the Togolese government plans to provide universal access to electricity by 2030. However, this ambition is hampered by insufficient overall conditions and the lack of performance of the national structures involved. Climate-sensitive rural electrification is well on the way in Togo, taking into account economic and social aspects.
