How much time do we spend on social media each day? The daily use of media such as Whatsapp, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, or Twitter can have an impact on mental health. This is the finding of a study published in the « American Journal of Preventive Medicine ». American researchers from the University of Arkansas have established a link between time spent on social networks and an increased risk of depression. They found that young adults who spend more than 5 hours a day on social networks are very likely to develop depressive symptoms.

Several factors may explain this finding. Excessive time spent on social networks is not, a fortiori, used for « real » relationships, personal or professional goals, or reflective moments. The fact that social networks mainly focus on the positive aspects of life; this can have an impact on self-esteem. These findings are particularly important to consider in the age of Covid-19. Now that it is more difficult to connect socially in physical terms, we are all using more technologies such as social networks. While these technologies may be convenient, are they really useful to people or do they risk leaving them feeling empty?
