Pulling all-nighters has a negative impact on the human body and leads to health problems. However, Swedish experts from Uppsala University and American experts from Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles have revealed another danger. According to their study, sleep deprivation is equivalent to eating fatty foods for 6 months.

The cause? Insulin, the hormone that influences the regulation of fat tissue. When the body becomes 'resistant' to insulin, it is forced to produce more insulin to keep blood sugar levels stable. This can eventually lead to type 2 diabetes. Obese individuals are more likely to develop insulin resistance and, consequently, to develop diabetes. This research demonstrates the importance of good sleep in maintaining blood sugar levels and reducing the risk of metabolic diseases such as obesity and diabetes.

Lack of sleep, even if it was only for one night, influences muscle deficit and promotes obesity. This causes lipids to start accumulating while the muscles show the first signs of breakdown. This is linked to the reduced ability to use the glucose circulating in the blood. According to the researchers, this information will help to understand why sleep disorders increase the risk of obesity as well as the development of non-insulin dependent diabetes.
