For the good of both mother and child, the World Health Organization (WHO) recommends breastfeeding for at least six months. Not an easy goal to achieve, but a legitimate one nonetheless. According to a British and Chinese team, breastfeeding confers a certain degree of protection against cardiovascular disease and stroke.

The longer the mother has breastfed, the greater the benefit.  The Journal of the American Heart Association shows that, compared with women who have never breastfed, those who have breastfed for any length of time have a reduced risk of stroke and cardiovascular events.  Breastfeeding is associated with a reduction in cardiac and cerebral risk of around 10%, with an increasing benefit for long-term breastfeeding.
