Vaginal air sounds, often referred to as « vaginal farts » or « queefs », are a natural phenomenon that can occur during sexual intercourse. Although they are harmless, they can sometimes be embarrassing or make one feel uncomfortable.

These sounds occur when air enters the vagina during sexual activity and is then suddenly released. This is more likely to happen in certain sexual positions or when the pelvic floor muscles are weak. It is neither a health problem nor a sign of infection; it is simply a mechanical reaction of the body.

Strengthening the pelvic floor

A strong pelvic floor can help better control the movement of air in and out of the vagina. Kegel exercises can be helpful: tighten the pelvic floor muscles as if trying to hold back urine. Hold the contraction for five seconds, then relax for five seconds. Repeat the exercise 10 to 15 times, twice a day. In addition to reducing vaginal air sounds, these exercises can improve sexual comfort and sensations.

Choosing suitable sexual positions

Some sexual positions are more likely to allow air to enter the vagina. Positions in which the vagina is more open, such as the doggy style position, may increase the likelihood of these sounds. More “closed” positions, such as the missionary position, spooning, or being on top while controlling the pace, may help reduce them. These positions can limit the “piston-like” movement that contributes to air entering the vagina.

Maintaining a comfortable pace and good lubrication

Sudden or very rapid movements can increase vaginal air sounds. A slower, smoother rhythm can help maintain more stable internal pressure. It is also important to ensure adequate natural or appropriate lubrication. This allows smoother movement and may reduce the creation of air pockets.

Focusing on breathing and relaxation

Muscle tension, particularly around the lower abdomen and pelvic floor, may contribute to air entering the vagina. Before and during sexual activity, try to breathe deeply, relax the hips and pelvic floor, and allow enough time for foreplay so that the body is properly prepared.
