After
Lomé, Kpalimé, Sokodé and Kara, the Institut National d'Assurance Maladie
(INAM) organised the final stage of its "Universités du 3ème âge" in
Dapaong on Tuesday 12 March 2024. The event was attended by the Prefect of
Tône, Tchimbiandja Yendoukoa Douti, administrative authorities and over a
hundred elderly people.
The 5th edition of the Universities of the 3rd Age mobilised the elderly in the town of Dapaong around the theme of « Keeping promises to the elderly ». The aim is to create a framework for information, exchange and awareness-raising on the health and well-being of senior citizens, and to mobilise 3rd age stakeholders in the Savanes region to prevent and promote their health. The aim was to promote good health practices among this social stratum, raise awareness of diseases associated with old age and the dangers of using fake medicines. It was also an opportunity to encourage senior citizens to play their part in promoting peace and social cohesion among the younger generations.
The
Dapaong meeting featured a number of presentations, including: « What
diet should diabetics and hypertensives of the 3rd age choose », « The
dangers of using fake medicines and alcohol among the elderly », « The
role of the elderly in strengthening social cohesion » and « INAM:
health insurance cover for the elderly ». The participants also held
talks and debates on diseases associated with old age and the consequences of
the use of counterfeit medicines.
At
the opening ceremony, Tchimbiandja Yendoukoa Douti, Prefect of Tône, welcomed
the holding of this 5th event in Dapaong. He urged the elderly to avoid all
kinds of drinks and medicines that are harmful to their health.
According
to Amouzou Koueté-Teko, representing the Director General of INAM, in Togo the
situation of the elderly occupies a prominent place in the government's social
inclusion policy.A number of measures are being taken to help senior citizens
integrate more fully into society and live a decent life. These include the
construction and ongoing development of two retirement homes in Lomé and Kara,
the creation of a national council for the elderly, and occasional support for
the various needs of the elderly.
