The
NGO Volontaires Internationaux pour la promotion de la Santé en Afrique (VISA)
is involving schoolchildren in the fight against diabetes in Togo. To this end,
it is organising the first edition of the Génie en Herbe competition, which
will take place at the Agora Senghor on 13 July 2024. The theme of the
competition, which will bring together pupils in the second year of sixth form
from 06 schools, is « Support for amputees suffering from diabetes ».
This information was given on Saturday 15 June at a press conference held in
Lomé.
The
budding genius competition on diabetes organised by the NGO VISA is much more
than a simple educational event; it is a dynamic platform that aims to promote
academic excellence, encourage creativity among young students and raise
awareness of the major challenges posed by the diabetes pandemic in our
society.
Given
the alarming increase in the number of cases of diabetes in Togo, it is
imperative to act proactively to inform and educate future generations about
this disease and its implications for public health. This competition will take
place on 13 July 2024 at the Agora Senghor, starting at 15:00 GMT, and will
bring together pupils in the second year of secondary school from 06 schools:
Lycée de Kouvahey, Lycée Agoè, Lycée NEE, Lycée Moderne d'adidogomé, Lycée NDA
and Institut Saint Francis.
The
main aim of the activity is to promote academic excellence, stimulate the
creative and innovative spirit of young students, and raise awareness of the
challenges associated with diabetes, with particular emphasis on support for
people who have suffered amputations as a result of the disease.
According
to Dr Damien Ekoué-Kouvahey, Executive Director of the NGO VISA, the Génie en
Herbe diabetes competition is much more than just an educational event.
« The competition will consist of
a series of intellectual and creative tests in which students will have to
demonstrate their knowledge and skills in diabetes, while proposing innovative
solutions to support amputees. The tests will include general knowledge
questions, problem-solving challenges, oral presentations and awareness-raising
projects », explained Dr Ekoué-Kouvahey.
Participants
will need to prepare in advance by familiarising themselves with the
competition theme and acquiring knowledge about diabetes and its impact. They
will also have to develop innovative ideas for supporting people with diabetes,
and be ready to present them to a panel of experts at the event.
Prizes
will be awarded to the best candidates based on the number of correct answers
they provide. The winners will also be rewarded with merit trophies, school
supplies and envelopes at the closing ceremony.
