A stomach, gastric or peptic ulcer is a condition in which there is a loss of substance in the mucous membranes of the digestive tract or stomach lining. It is generally linked to the presence of the Helicobacter pylori bacterium, but is also encouraged by stress, alcohol and tobacco consumption and certain medications. When present, symptoms of peptic ulcer disease are not very specific, and include abdominal pain in spurts, nausea and vomiting, and possible loss of appetite. It is therefore advisable to consult a doctor if you have these symptoms or if you suspect you have a stomach ulcer. Once the diagnosis has been made, medication is prescribed and surgery is considered in the most serious cases.

Cabbage juice obtained using an extractor is a natural solution often used to overcome digestive problems and inflammation. With a doctor's approval, it can also be used to treat colitis and stomach ulcers, since cabbage has healing properties, particularly in the gastrointestinal tract. In 1949, researchers at Stanford University wanted to test the effectiveness of cabbage juice in treating ulcers. They gave a group of ulcer sufferers a litre of raw cabbage juice a day. The results showed that these people healed six times faster than those on the conventional diet given at the time to people suffering from ulcers in the digestive tract.

Cabbage, a natural remedy

If you suffer from stomach or gastrointestinal ulcers or inflammation of the intestinal tract, a glass of this green juice will provide relief for 2-3 days. Studies have shown that freshly made cabbage juice not only gives immediate relief from ulcers, but also considerably reduces the time it takes for the crater to heal compared with standard treatment.  Spectacularly, it is said to take 7 days less than the standard therapeutic healing time of 42 days. The active ulcer treatment component in raw cabbage juice is vitamin U, named for its ulcer healing factor, which is technically not a vitamin, but rather S-methylmethionine.

Cabbage juice is rich in powerful phytochemicals that help protect and heal the lining of the digestive tract and stomach. Cabbage juice also contains sulforaphane, an antioxidant that kills the H. pylori bacteria responsible for causing peptic ulcers.

Meanwhile, the amino acid glutamine, found in abundance in cabbage juice, is considered superior to commercial antacids in terms of ulcer treatment for its ability to nourish and repair the gastrointestinal lining. A daily dose of cabbage juice is also an excellent way of preventing ulcers.

Good for digestion

Cabbage juice really is a saviour for digestive tracts in distress. Containing phytochemicals, cabbage juice soothes acid reflux and painful inflammation of the digestive tract. The lactic acid found in cabbage juice restores friendly intestinal flora and cleanses and disinfects the colon, making it an ideal treatment for colitis.

Recipe : Wash and chop the raw cabbage and place in the juicer. It's important to choose organic cabbage heads, which are firm without discolouration (which means loss of nutrients). You can mix the juice with other vegetables or fruit. Good combinations are carrots and apples.

A course of cabbage juice, one glass a day, is also good against: depression, acne, liver congestion, asthma, kidney problems, bronchitis, catarrh, constipation, cracks, gum infections, dermatitis, gout. Cabbage juice also helps purify the blood and revitalise the body.
