The effects of excessive alcohol consumption on health are well known to the general public. What is less well known, however, is that it can also increase the risk of lung infections. Researchers have now examined its effects on the respiratory system. According to the results of their study, heavy drinkers are more likely to suffer from lung problems. Heavy drinkers include men who drink more than two glasses of alcohol a day, women who drink at least one glass a day, and all adults who drink rapidly and excessively at least once a week.

According to researchers at the University of Chicago, excessive drinkers had lower levels of nitric oxide in exhaled air than non-drinkers or occasional drinkers. Nitric oxide is an important gas because it protects the body against certain bacteria, notably those responsible for respiratory infections. As a result, the pulmonary balance of heavy alcohol consumers is disturbed, making them more susceptible to infectious diseases.

Excessive alcohol consumption increases the risk of developing cancer of the liver, breast, esophagus and mouth, not to mention other diseases of the body. According to the researchers, this discovery requires further research to understand the complex interactions between alcohol and nitric oxide in the respiratory tract. However, heavy drinkers need to change their behavior.
