The heart is a vital but fragile organ. Eating habits can put it at risk. Some foods are veritable silent threats. These hidden enemies in everyday dishes undermine cardiovascular health.
To prevent cardiovascular disease, you should avoid eating certain foods too regularly, especially those containing too much saturated fat and salt.
Salt in excess
Salt is ubiquitous, but a
discreet danger. It's found in ready-made meals, canned foods, broths and cold
meats. Excess salt promotes high blood pressure. It's a major risk factor for
cardiovascular disease. The WHO recommends less than 5g of salt a day, or one
teaspoon. Most people consume much more. To
reduce salt consumption, use spices, aromatic herbs, lemon or garlic.
Saturated fats
Saturated fats are found in
fatty meats, processed foods, industrial pastries and fried foods. They
increase the number of bad fats, and are a threat to arteries. They contribute
to the formation of atherosclerotic plaque. It's best to limit or avoid hydrogenated margarine, potato chips, fast
food and industrial cakes. Instead, opt for high-quality vegetable oils (soy,
peanut, coconut, walnut), avocado and oily fish.
Hidden sugar
Excessive sugar consumption
can lead to chronic inflammation. It's a deceptive sweetness. It promotes type
2 diabetes and heart disease. Sweets, energy and soft drinks, sweet cereals,
flavored yogurts and industrial sauces all contain a lot of sugar. It's important to read labels. Reduce your
consumption of refined sugar.
Red meat and cold cuts
These products are rich in
saturated fats, salt and additives. They are associated with an increased risk
of cardiovascular disease. Moderate
consumption is recommended. Vegetable proteins and fish are preferable.
Alcohol
Alcohol is sometimes praised
for its benefits in small doses. However, alcohol abuse increases blood
pressure. It raises triglycerides and increases the risk of atrial
fibrillation. Alcohol consumption should be limited.
The road to a healthy heart
The best way to preserve your heart starts with your diet. A balanced
diet is essential. It should be rich in fruit, vegetables, legumes, wholegrain
cereals and good fats. Reducing these silent enemies is a concrete step towards
a longer, healthier life.
