Water fasting is a type of fasting in which we abstain from all food, but continue to drink water. This type of fasting is practiced for various reasons, ranging from physical purification to spiritual goals, weight loss or detoxification. Dr Maarira Koutoumna, Nutritionist-Biogeneticist specialized in nutritional education and health pedagogy (Togo) shows how to make the young water.

Water fasting is the voluntary cessation of food consumption for a certain period of time to allow the body to rest and regenerate. Unlike dry fasting, here you can drink water throughout the day. The young person is hydrated in various ways taking into account the situation of the individual. It can be done by drinking water alone or with other liquids or drinks including herbal teas, juices, or vegetable soups. Water fasting is not practiced like religious or traditional fasts which are generally characterized by abstinence from drinking, eating certain foods or all foods at certain times or for a number of days. But rather, it is a medical, therapeutic and scientific fasting. It is a curative method that leads to clean up the body based on water, fruit juices, herbal teas, infusions, vegetable soups.

The principle of water fasting

The father of medicine, Hippocrates, said that “eating when you are sick is feeding your illness”. The young hydrologist draws its scientific essence from the traditional therapeutic experiments of Hippocrates, from the experiences of the therapeutic fasting of the German doctor Otto Büchinger (1878-1966). Animals, when they are sick, have an instinctive wisdom that leads them to stop feeding in order to heal.

According to the experiments of these two scientists, when the body is subjected to a dietary deficiency, It is subject to a stress that forces it to draw on its reserves and compels it to physiological self-regulation where we see healthy cells strengthen and sick cells weaken. There is also an emotional self-regulation, with a hormonal upheaval caused by fasting that activates the production of serotonin and phenylethylamine, which are the hormones of happiness and joy.

Water fasting triggers autophagy, the phenomenon of disintegration of tissues of poor quality. Then follows a process of reconstruction and regeneration of healthy tissues. Because of this, the body recovers everything that can be useful to it and burns its reserve to have energy. Water fasting gives the body time to do a thorough cleaning of the arterial and venous walls, cells of all organs and spaces that separate them.

Who can fast with water?

Anyone can do it, but people who suffer from diseases such as diabetes, tuberculosis, ulcers, anemia, hepatitis, high blood pressure, cancers and children must be accompanied by a health professional who is familiar with this therapeutic practice.

The reactions or discomforts of the young hydric.

We often talk about detoxification crisis: fatigue, headaches, irritability, slight discomfort, liver crises, insomnia, anxiety, punctual fatigue, punctual hypoglycemia, digestion problems. These inconveniences are temporary and never last very long.  Detoxification crisis can be reduced by adding juice and water as needed. Hypotension occurs at the beginning of fasting and causes fatigue and lethargy. To cope with fatigue and irritability, take the time to rest in a quiet place.

When to fast water?

It is advisable to fast when you are on leave. Because it is a practice that requires a lot of rest, calm in order to allow the body to self-regulate and regenerate. If the treating specialist prescribes a therapeutic fasting, then one should take time to rest and do nothing as an activity.  If you want to go to work and fast with water, you have to reduce the time and intensity of work. It must be borne in mind that the two assets to succeed this fast is calm and rest. Where possible, it is advisable to retire in the countryside or in a center or house where there is calm.
