WHO/Togo
in collaboration with the National Tuberculosis Control Programme (PNLT)
organised on Friday 24 March 2023, a briefing for journalists on the
tuberculosis situation in Togo for the year 2022. According to the data, about
2500 to 3000 cases were detected in 2022.
According
to Mohammed Fall Dogo, epidemiologist and coordinator of the National
Tuberculosis Control programme (PNLT), the number of patients who recover from
tuberculosis is 86 to 90%. « We detect about 2,500 to 3,000 cases of
tuberculosis per year in Togo. And among this number detected, we have a
percentage of 8% who die from it. But what is interesting to note is that 86 to
90% of these cases are treated and cured », said the epidemiologist.
The
treatment of the disease is free. It consists of taking tablets with biological
monitoring for 6 months and at the end, the patient is declared cured. The
coordinator of the NTP said that Togo has made progress that reassures actors
to do better in the fight against tuberculosis. « Today, in Togo, the
technical platform has been improved for the diagnosis of tuberculosis. There
has also been the setting up of a training programme for technicians and actors
in the fight against tuberculosis to enable them to provide quality care to the
population », he explained. The population must be screened. When you
are under treatment, you have to take your medication regularly for six months
in order to prevent the microbes from resisting the treatment.
Tuberculosis
is an infectious disease that is caused by a microbe called the tuberculosis
microbial or Koch's bacillus. It is a disease that preferentially attacks the
lungs. This means that the main symptom is coughing. But beyond that, it can
attack other organs in the human body. « Yes,
we can end TB! » This is the theme of World TB Day 2023.
