Diet affects mood and stress levels in different ways. According to a study published in the medical journal “Nutritional Neuroscience”, eating antioxidant foods after the age of 30 is particularly recommended.

Researchers at Binghamton University (England) show that eating habits affect mood and stress levels in different ways for adults over and under the age of 30. For 18-29 year-olds, when the brain has not yet reached full maturity, eating meat (red or white) and engaging in physical activity are factors of good mental health, as they promote the concentration of neurotransmitters such as serotonin and dopamine in the brain. After the age of 30, on the other hand, mood seems to be enhanced by the consumption of antioxidant foods (fruit and vegetables) and diminished by foods that increase oxidative stress and activate the sympathetic nervous system, such as coffee and ingredients with a high glycemic index (white flours, cookies, pastries, viennoiseries). As we age, there is an increase in the formation of free radicals in the body, hence the greater need for antioxidants. These free radicals cause disturbances in the brain that increase the risk of mental distress. Certain behaviors, such as skipping breakfast, are also harmful.
