Eating too much can lead to health problems. « Mainly excess weight, because when you eat more than your body needs, it converts the surplus into reserves. Overeating can also lead to digestive problems such as gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GERD) », stresses Dr Binetou Cheikh Seck, dietician-nutritionist at the Nutridéal dietetic clinic in Dakar, Senegal.

What can you do to avoid overeating?Dr Binetou Cheikh Seck gives advice on how to avoid overeating on a daily basis: Avoid eating when you're not hungry.Eat before you're too hungry or starving.Eat from an individual plate instead of a communal bowl, because the latter encourages overeating. Eat slowly, putting the cutlery down between two mouthfuls to chew properly, and stop eating as soon as you feel satisfied. The stomach should not be completely full.Avoid refilling by removing the serving plates and keeping the dessert, in this case the fruit, close at hand. Eat mindfully: don't eat while working, on the phone or surfing the net.

By applying these tips, in less than a week the elastic pouch that is the stomach shrinks and you realise that you can't eat as much as you used to.
