Consumption of sweetened and artificially sweetened (with sweeteners) drinks is associated with higher cancer mortality, but specifically for obesity-related cancers. The higher the body mass index (BMI), the higher the risk of developing cancer. Researchers from the American Cancer Society report that the risk of death from obesity-related cancer was 5% higher for drinkers of at least two cans of sugary drinks a day, compared with people who never drank them.
