The microbiota contains
over a thousand species of bacteria. These live in symbiosis with the human
body, providing health benefits. According to a study published in the journal
Elsevier, a disturbance of this microbiota plays a role in the etiology of
binge eating and bulimia. The gut and central nervous system communicate via
sympathetic and parasympathetic nerves, secreting neurotransmitters such as
serotonin and dopamine. A dysfunction of the serotonin system, caused by a
disturbed microbiota, leads to irritability and binge-eating episodes in
bulimia sufferers.
