The
Centre Hospitalier Universitaire (CHU) Campus de Lomé is now home to an
ultra-modern pediatric surgery unit. The infrastructure has been refurbished
and equipped with the latest-generation equipment thanks to the NGO Smile Train
and its partner KidsOR. The inauguration took place on Wednesday August 30,
2023.
Eugénie
Akakpo, Director of Cabinet at the Ministry of Health, presided over the
ceremony. The ceremony was attended by CHU Campus Director General Dr Kalao
Essodom, Smile Train's West Africa Director Dr Nina Capo-Chichi, and Head of
Pediatric Surgery Prof Grégoire Akakpo Numado.
The
block is essentially composed of an operating table with its accessories, the
scialytic lamp, the anesthesia table (for anesthesia and breathing of the child
during the operation), surgical stools, cupboards, tables among others. The
walls are also decorated with drawings to help children feel at ease during the
process leading up to the operation. A recovery room suitable for children is
also provided.
This
equipment will enable safer surgery in a well-equipped room that feels more
like a healing space. For Dr. Nina Capo-Chichi, children need specialized
surgical equipment and expertise, as well as a recovery environment in which
they feel safe and comfortable.
« The
hospital's pediatric operating room and recovery room brighten the spirits and
moods of children and adults alike. This jewel will improve surgical care for
these children, in terms of creating a more suitable environment before and
during surgery, even eliminating pre-operative anxiety, and more positive
surgical outcomes », she emphasized. The Director of CHU
Campus and the Head of the Pediatric Surgery Department expressed their delight
at the support of the NGO Smile Train and the inauguration of this renovated
operating theater for the benefit of children with surgical pathologies such as
cleft lip and palate.
The
Director of Cabinet of the Ministry of Health expressed her commitment to
ensuring that the equipment is properly used and maintained, so that the
expected results are achieved. To this end, she asked CHU Campus managers to
ensure the safety and preventive maintenance of the equipment. On behalf of the
Minister of Health, she expressed her thanks to Smile Train and to all those
who had contributed to the project.
In
Togo, Smile Train began its programs in 2010, and to date has transformed the
lives of over 600 patients in the country. Over the past two years, a
partnership has been established with three (03) key hospitals in the country,
namely CHU Campus de Lomé, CHP d'Aneho and CHU Kara.
