The
fruit of the baobab is eaten more often than the leaves. The leaves are used as
condiments in sauces. In addition to this dietary contribution, baobab leaves
can be used to treat certain illnesses. What can baobab leaves do to relieve an
asthma attack?
Baobab
leaves are an important source of calcium and iron. Rich in antioxidants,
phosphorus, potassium, magnesium, manganese, zinc, provitamin A and vitamin C,
they are an excellent natural food supplement.
Relieving
asthma attacks
In
a study entitled « Nutritional Quality and Functional Properties of
Baobab (Adansonia digitata) Pulp from Tanzania » published in the
Journal of Food Research in 2016 by Tanzanian scientist Aluko A. and his peers,
baobab is clearly an anti-asthmatic.Its effectiveness in treating asthma has
also been proven. The leaves are an
excellent source of vitamin A, calcium, iron, potassium, magnesium, manganese,
molybdenum and phosphorus, and are often used to relieve asthma attacks in
several countries, notably Senegal.
Thanks
to their content of organic acids, mainly citric and tartaric acids, baobab
leaves can be used in the treatment of asthma. Very rich in iron, regular
consumption of baobab leaves as a condiment in sauces and soups helps maintain
good respiratory health.Antioxidants neutralise the effects of free radicals in
the body. Vitamins A, B6, E, zinc and alpha-lipoic acid are all antioxidants
contained in baobab leaves, helping to reduce asthma attacks. In Madagascar, baobab leaves are used in the
treatment of asthma. This was reported in the scientific manual « Les
plantes médicinales malgaches.Catalogue de nos connaissances chimiques et
pharmaceutiques », Mémoires de l'Institut scientifique de
Madagascar.Série B, Tome 8, 217 - 303, published in 1957.
Recipe:
Take 1 teaspoonful of dry leaf powder directly into the mouth at the start of
the attack; swallow with a little water. Take a second dose half an hour later.
