On 05 and 06 December 2023, the Hôtel du 2 Février in Lomé will host the regional closing workshop for the AmplifyPF and West Africa Breakthrough Action (WABA) projects. Both projects were funded by USAID, the Regional Office of Health for West Africa based in Accra, Ghana. Held under the patronage of Togo's Minister of Health, Public Hygiene and Universal Access to Health Care, the Lomé meeting will bring together around one hundred participants from the four countries to review the overall results and look at ways of sustaining the gains made. The information was given on Wednesday 29 November at a briefing for journalists held at the Pathfinder International headquarters in Lomé.

Implemented by Pathfinder International and the Center for Communication Programs at Jogns Hopkins University, since 2018 in Burkina-Faso, Côte d'Ivoire, Niger and Togo, the two projects have worked closely with governments, civil society and communities in 19 health districts in the other four intervention countries.

Amplify FP and WABA project to increase the use of FP services

The project aims to combat maternal, neonatal and infant mortality. This is why action has been taken to mobilise partners to expand quality family planning (FP) services in the West African region and contribute to achieving the Ouagadougou Partnership's objective of reaching 2.2 million additional FP users.  For 5 years (from 26 June 2018 to 25 June 2023), the AmplifyPF project provided support to health districts to improve the delivery of FP services and ensure better coordination of RH/FP projects financed by the US government in the sub-region.

By 2023, this project will have enabled Togo to increase modern contraceptive prevalence by 10 percentage points, from 24.4% in 2018 to 34.4% in 2023, to have a cumulative number of couple-years of protection over the five years of 2,495,000, to increase the number of additional users of contraceptive methods by 363,892 and, finally, to increase the number of community health workers supported by the US government. In Togo, this project is a catalyst, organiser and federator of resources and health networks to accelerate the provision of family planning services and the use of contraception in Togo.

The WABA project aims to increase the use of family planning and reproductive health (FP/RH) services in the four countries, thereby contributing to the Ouagadougou Partnership's objective of reaching 6.5 million additional users of modern contraceptive methods in the region by 2030.

According to the Regional Director of the Amplify FP project, Dr Aguima Frank Tankoano, it is desirable that these approaches are sustained and implemented, as some very good practices have emerged from these projects.

The AmplifyPF and WABA projects are developing several strategies to improve people's access to family planning information and services. Some of these strategies are community dialogue, which takes place in the community, and guided site visits, which take place in health facilities.
