Researchers at the University of Helsinki in Finland
have revealed the importance of another good habit: looking after your teeth.
Their study establishes a direct link between dental disease and acute coronary
syndrome (ACS), which describes any health problem resulting from a sudden
reduction in the blood supply to the heart, leading to angina pectoris or a
heart attack. These dental infections are fairly common and in most cases
asymptomatic, which is why they are only detected years after they occur. Acute
coronary syndrome (ACS) is the obstruction of one or more coronary arteries. It
is manifested by persistent chest pain and coronary insufficiency caused by one
or more blocked coronary arteries. ACS is elevated in people with apical
periodontitis, an infection of the area around the root tip of a tooth. It is
most often associated with the presence of caries or an inflammation or
infection of the gum or the alveolar-dental ligament or the bone surrounding
the tooth. These people need treatment. Oral infections can affect other parts
of the body too. To prevent all these diseases, dentists recommend brushing
your teeth twice a day for two minutes and visiting your dentist once a year.
