Dental problems are one of the causes
of high blood pressure. People suffering from periodontal problems are forced
to adapt their diet, which can influence blood pressure. A healthy mouth
reduces hypertension problems. 20% of patients suffering from hypertension and
gum inflammation are more likely to develop complications linked to their blood
pressure. On the other hand, people with healthy gums and few cavities have
lower blood pressure, and benefit more from treatment for high blood pressure.
But dental problems are not a cause of high blood pressure. Chronic gum
infection can sometimes cause stiffening of the arteries, which in turn can
lead to high blood pressure. This cause-and-effect relationship is not
systematic, however, and acts over the long term. It's not like sleep apnoea,
which can cause a rise in blood pressure when you wake up the next morning.
Good dental hygiene is nevertheless recommended to prevent the risk of heart
disease and high blood pressure.
