Syncope is a generally benign loss of consciousness. While in around 35% of cases, syncope has an unexplained origin, a large proportion is linked to a cardiovascular disorder or cardiac pathology.
This may be due to reflex vasodilatation (responsible for hypotension), or orthostatic hypotension (when suddenly changing position from lying down to standing up, for example). Arrhythmias are heart rhythm disorders that lead to loss of consciousness. Cardiac syncope can occur during exercise, but also at other times, leading to dizziness, heart palpitations and extreme discomfort. Do not ignore these symptoms. Seek prompt medical attention.
