Togo is currently facing a measles epidemic, according to the health authorities. Cases have been confirmed in several districts of the country, notably in the regions of Kéran and Oti-Sud, which have been placed in a state of epidemic. The information was made public by the Minister for Health, Pr Moustapha Mijiyawa, in a press release dated 08 March 2024.

Measures were quickly taken to counter the spread of the disease. Similarly, investigations are underway to identify and deal effectively with any new cases. Measures have also been put in place to strengthen epidemiological surveillance, raise awareness of routine measles vaccination and promote basic barrier behaviours.

People are being urged to be vigilant and to adopt preventive behaviours such as washing their hands regularly, cleaning surfaces and avoiding touching their faces. As measles is highly contagious, the authorities recommend that anyone with symptoms such as fever, rash, runny nose or red eyes should go to a health centre immediately.

The Minister of Health also stressed the importance of early treatment, saying that the earlier the patient is treated, the greater the chances of recovery.
