The Centre National d'Appareillage Orthopédique
(CNAO), in collaboration with its partner MiracleFeet, has announced some
excellent news for families in Togo: treatment for clubfoot is now completely
free of charge. The aim of
this initiative is to provide early and accessible care for children born with
this congenital malformation, which is often unrecognised and sometimes poorly
treated.
Clubfoot is a congenital malformation that affects the
foot. In a child born with this condition, the feet are turned inwards and the
toes point downwards, giving the impression that the child is walking on the
back of the foot. Between1 January and 30 June 2024, the CNAO
recorded 83 cases. Without proper treatment, this can lead to walking
difficulties and even long-term disability. The good news is that, when
detected and treated early, usually from birth, clubfoot can be treated effectively.
Free care for children aged 0 to 2 years
The programme launched by the CNAO, with financial
support from MiracleFeet, enables any child born with clubfoot to benefit from
free comprehensive care, provided they are aged between 0 and 3.This initiative
aims to provide relief to Togolese families who might otherwise face
significant medical costs and limited access to specialist care.
This free programme is important because it not only
restores optimal mobility to the children concerned, but also prevents
long-term complications, including chronic pain, mobility difficulties and the
social stigma attached to abnormal walking.
The importance of early detection
The key to effective treatment of clubfoot is early
detection. That's why it's essential for parents and healthcare professionals to
examine newborns carefully and spot this malformation early. The earlier
treatment begins, the better the long-term results.
With free treatment now available, families no longer
have to hesitate to visit a health centre for diagnosis and treatment.
