At
the 2024 Climate and Clean Air Conference, 86 states and 83 non-state partners
drew up a joint programme in key emitting sectors such as agriculture, waste,
fossil fuels, domestic energy, heavy-duty vehicles and engines, and cooling.
Humanity is running up against ecological limits, triggering multiple crises
that threaten public health, food security, livelihoods and the ecosystems that
sustain us.
According
to the Clean Air and Climate Coalition (CACC), it is now possible, using known
techniques and existing technologies, to reduce methane emissions by 40% and
carbon emissions by 70% by 2030. The global commitment to reduce methane
emissions, made in 2021, is therefore a major step forward, provided that it is
developed on a large scale.
Although
the CCAC has estimated that it needs 150 million dollars to develop its
programmes, it is still two-thirds short of the budget. Air pollution is a
growing concern in many countries, and is still responsible for more than seven
million deaths a year, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO).
Over
the course of the three days, the coalition plans to address the issue of
funding and the global efforts required, organise technical sessions to present
the best practices to be followed in key emitting sectors, and open up dialogue
to enable the various States to develop political measures in line with
scientific advice.
