In Togo, the months of February and March will be marked by contrasting weather conditions across the country. According to recent forecasts published by the National Meteorological Agency (ANAMET), a relatively dry period will prevail throughout the country, with the exception of the Maritime and Plateaux regions, where light localised rainfall is expected.

During this period, temperatures will fluctuate between 20 and 40°C, slightly above seasonal normals, which may accentuate the feeling of heat in several localities, says the Agency. This high heat may lead to an increased risk of respiratory illnesses due to the dust and dry fog.

To cope with the bad weather, the agency advises people to: avoid early vegetation fires to prevent forest fires; stay hydrated and limit exposure to the sun to avoid dehydration; manage water resources wisely, as rivers and reservoirs will reach very low levels; and take health precautions, including vaccination against meningitis and protection against respiratory infections.

In addition, a weather report for 2024 shows a shortfall in rainfall compared with 2023, but also compared with the averages for the last five and thirty years. For several years now, ANAMET has been publishing regular seasonal forecasts with the aim of strengthening the resilience of communities, and in particular farmers, to the challenges posed by climate change.
