A study published on 6 February 2025 in “Nature Communications” reveals that air pollution by fine particles has an impact not only on respiratory health, but also on cognitive abilities. According to the researchers, selective attention and emotion recognition were impaired after just four hours of exposure, while working memory remained intact. These results show that pollution affects functions that are essential to daily activities. This decline in cognitive performance has major economic and societal consequences. Faced with these risks, the researchers are calling for stricter regulations to limit air pollution, particularly in urban areas, in order to protect brain health and maintain productivity.
