If sleep deprivation is bad for your health, irregular wake-up and bedtimes can also have harmful consequences. People with irregular sleep schedules are more likely than others to suffer from metabolic diseases such as diabetes, obesity, unhealthy fats and hypertension. Even taking into account the amount of sleep a person gets and other lifestyle factors, a one-hour difference in bedtime from one night to the next, or in the length of a night's sleep, multiplies undesirable metabolic effects.
Each hour less or more of sleep can
increase the risk of metabolic abnormalities by up to 27%. One study also found
that every hour's difference between the usual bedtime and wake-up time can
increase the risk by 23%. The most frequent metabolic problems can be a drop in
good fats, an increase in waist circumference, blood pressure or fasting blood
sugar levels. These data suggest that everyone should strive to maintain a
regular sleep schedule to improve their metabolic health.
