Stress at work significantly increases the risk of suffering from peripheral arterial disease, characterised by the progressive obstruction of the arteries known as peripheral, in relation to the heart, particularly those in the legs. Stress at work is characterised by high pressure and low control, two key factors in the development of burn out. According to a Swedish team (Karolinska Institutet), the role of occupational stress in peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is still unclear. Pressure at work is associated with a consistent increase in the risk of hospitalisation for peripheral arterial disease, and hence with a higher relative risk of developing coronary heart disease or stroke. The cause-and-effect relationship remains to be clarified, but it is likely to relate to an inflammatory phenomenon.
