In the journal «Scientific
Reports», researchers demonstrate how prolonged exposure to light can have
irreversible consequences for eyesight. When you look at a television screen,
computer or tablet, the light emitted activates the photoreceptors. A network
of cells that is very dense in the eye, but also very sensitive. The blue light
from screens interacts with the photoreceptors and activates a molecule,
retinal, contained in each of the cells. But once exposed to blue light,
retinal becomes toxic. After spending more than two to three and a half hours
in front of a screen, the molecule ends up killing the photoreceptor by
damaging the cell membrane.
Avoid screens in the dark.
The chemical reaction is even stronger and more destructive when
the screen is viewed in the dark, as the pupils are dilated. Monitor and
protect children from prolonged exposure to screens . Their lenses do
not filter blue light.
