Social
isolation can be defined as a regular lack of social interaction. Loneliness is
more an emotion, a feeling, which means that you can feel alone even when
surrounded. More than 40 years of research has clearly shown that
social isolation and loneliness are both associated with adverse health
effects. This is explained by a press release issued by the American Heart
Association on Thursday, August 4, 2022. These two elements are common but
underestimated factors that affect the heart system, in addition to blood
vessels and the brain.
Social
isolation and loneliness are also associated with a more unfavourable prognosis
in people who already have coronary heart disease or stroke. It is urgent to
develop appropriate prevention and management strategies for people at risk.
Clinicians should then be prepared to refer socially isolated or solitary
individuals, especially those with a history of heart disease or stroke, to
community resources to help them connect with others.
