A team of psychologists from the University of Kansas has reviewed previous research on the physiological and psychological effects of added sugar consumption. Their findings, published in the journal « Medical Hypotheses », show that the consumption of sugary foods, which is particularly common at this time of year, may cause some of the metabolic, inflammatory and neurobiological processes linked to depression. High sugar consumption, together with changes in sleep patterns, can have a combined negative effect on mental health. People who suffer from depression often need to avoid foods with too much sugar to reduce symptoms.
Suffering from these SAD symptoms can lead to a craving for more sugar, which temporarily improves their mood, which can make the symptoms worse. When sweets are consumed, they act like a drug. They have an immediate mood-enhancing effect but in large doses can have pernicious long-term consequences, worsening mood, reducing well-being, increasing inflammation and causing weight gain.
Limit sugar and alcohol
Sugar can not only increase inflammation, which is linked to depression, but also affect the gut microbiome. Some parasitic microbes that live in our gut thrive on sugar. They can produce chemical reactions that put the brain into a state of anxiety, stress and depression. They are also highly inflammatory.
Beware of alcohol, which is also full of sugar. One alcoholic drink a day is said to be safe and may have a beneficial effect on some people. On the other hand, alcohol is high in calories, high in energy but has no nutrients and is very toxic in high doses. Sugars are very similar. In times of depression, people need to provide all the necessary nutrients to the brain and especially avoid these potential toxins. Limit ultra-processed foods and favour fruits and vegetables and omega 3.
