The
effects of back pain on everyday life are felt. However, few patients really
care about this persistent pain, mistakenly believing that it will disappear as
it appeared.
When
the back pain is mechanical, the temporary pain may subside on its own. But it
can also be of inflammatory origin, linked to diseases such as spondylarthritis
for example. In which case a precise diagnosis is essential. However, some
people wait up to 10 years or more before their inflammatory back pain is
correctly identified.
Do
not remain sedentary
Low
back pain is pain in the lower back. It can be temporary or chronic. In all
cases, prolonged rest is a bad therapeutic solution. Immobilisation weakens the
back and is an important factor in the loss of confidence. It risks reinforcing
the fear of moving and, ultimately, increasing the risk of recurrence. On the
contrary, in order to heal quickly, low back pain sufferers must resume
physical activity as soon as the pain stops being annoying, on the advice and
under the control of the physiotherapist.
A
distinction must be made between common low back pain and so-called symptomatic
low back pain. The former are not serious in the medical sense of the term.
Nevertheless, they can be very painful and require medical advice. In some
cases, low back pain can be caused by an underlying disease, such as cancer,
infection, fracture or malformation. This is the so-called symptomatic form. In
general, therefore, when faced with persistent low back pain, it is imperative
to seek medical advice in order to identify the exact problem. This step is essential before deciding on the
best therapeutic strategy.
