According to the WHO, 1.1 billion teenagers and young adults are at risk of hearing loss as a result of prolonged and regular use of personal audio devices, including smartphones, and exposure to harmful noise levels in certain leisure venues, such as nightclubs, bars and sporting events. When the sound is particularly loud, regular or prolonged, it can lead to: total or partial deafness, which can appear prematurely and permanently; a buzzing or whistling sound heard every day without interruption; and hyperacusis, which makes sufferers intolerant of the slightest noise.
