The content
of the plate is very important for health, but what about the speed of
consumption? The overloaded daily life sometimes pushes you to swallow meals at
full speed, between an appointment and a phone call. However, the digestive
system needs 15 to 20 minutes to get started and work well. Not chewing enough
each bite is linked to a number of health risks. Sandrine Zerbo,
Nutritionist-Dietitian of State, Specialist in Clinical Nutrition and Enteral
and Parenteral Nutrition, therefore evokes five good reasons to take the time
to eat.
Pressed,
stressed and constantly under pressure, the lifestyle often forces to spend
meals, to swallow them without thinking while these are nevertheless considered
essential for the body. Here’s why eating slowly is good for your health.
Insulin
resistance
Swallowing
your meals too quickly is sometimes linked to an increased risk of type 2
diabetes. This disease can be caused by insulin resistance, when the body’s cells
do not respond effectively to this hormone. If you eat too fast, you tend not
to feel full. This leads to overeating. This can cause glucose fluctuation
which can lead to insulin resistance.
Protect his
heart
People who
eat very quickly are at risk of developing metabolic syndrome, which exposes
them to heart disease by increasing blood pressure, bad cholesterol and weight.
Stay in shape
Rapid
consumption of food leads to a decrease in satisfaction, but high calorie
intake. The risk of obesity is therefore also higher because the body does not
have time to send satiety signals to the brain.
Avoid reflux
Uncooked foods that flow quickly into the
stomach in large quantities can cause acid reflux. Burning, indigestion,
nausea, abdominal pain, these symptoms can manifest after meals, even during
the night.
Do not choke
Children and adults can choke on food if
swallowed too quickly and not chewed enough. Talking or laughing while eating
also increases this risk. Chewing properly and not swallowing large bites can
limit this problem.
