More than 400 people, with an average age of 40, took part in an original scientific experiment: to understand the effect of gardening on physical and mental health by taking part in community garden activities.  Scientists from the University of South Carolina (USA) monitored changes in the participants' diet, physical exercise, stress and anxiety over the course of a year. They found that the participants' physical and mental health improved. They tended to eat more fibre-rich meals, and to do more physical activities related to gardening, up to an extra 80 minutes a day for the most motivated. They also felt less stressed.
