In the journal "Scientific Reports", researchers demonstrate how prolonged exposure to light can have irreversible consequences for eyesight. When looking at a TV screen, computer or tablet, the light emitted activates the photoreceptors. This network of cells is very dense in the eye, but also very sensitive.
The blue light from screens interacts with
photoreceptors and activates a molecule, retinal, contained in each cell. But
once exposed to blue light, retinal becomes toxic. After more than two to three
and a half hours spent in front of a screen, the molecule eventually kills the
photoreceptor, by damaging the cell membrane.
Avoid screens in the dark. The chemical reaction is
even stronger and more destructive when the screen is viewed in the dark, as
pupils are dilated. Monitor and protect children from prolonged exposure to
screens. Their crystalline lens does not filter blue light.
