A diet too low in vitamin C
can lead to bleeding gums. Bleeding gums are one of the symptoms of sensitive
gums, gum inflammation or gingivitis, or even periodontitis. In a study
published on February 1st in the journal "Nutrition Reviews,"
American researchers suggest also looking at dietary intake of vitamin C, as
bleeding gums can be a sign of deficiency.
According to the researchers,
when we see our gums bleeding, the first thing we should think is not, "I should brush my teeth more often."
We should try to understand why the gums bleed. And a deficiency in vitamin C
is one possible reason. Increasing the daily intake of vitamin C in people with
bleeding gums helps reduce these bleeding problems. The recommendation for
people who regularly experience bleeding gums is to keep an eye on their daily
intake of vitamin C, especially by incorporating into their diet foods rich in
it, such as citrus fruits (lemon, grapefruit, orange), kale, and bell peppers.
"There was a time when bleeding gums
were more generally considered a potential marker of a lack of vitamin C. But
over time, they have been overshadowed or marginalized by this over-attention
to treating this bleeding symptom through brushing or flossing, rather than
addressing the cause," lamented the study's lead author.
