Every
year on 04 October, the whole world celebrates World Animal Day. The main aim
is to raise public awareness of biodiversity issues and combat animal
brutality. This year, World Animal Day 2024 focuses on the importance of
digital technologies for wildlife conservation. Innovative tools now make it
possible to track animals more effectively, combat illegal trafficking in
protected species and raise public awareness of biodiversity issues.
According
to Ivonne Higuero, Secretary General of the International Trade in Endangered
Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), digital innovations are changing the
way we protect biodiversity, which is of immeasurable value. Revolutionary
applications can now distinguish between different species of tiger in a matter
of seconds.Drones are helping to scour vast areas to locate sea turtle nesting
sites.Advanced tracking systems, real-time data analysis and artificial
intelligence-based solutions provide conservationists around the world with
unprecedented tools to identify, monitor, track and therefore protect animals
of all species.
Animals
play an essential role in the balance of ecosystems and in our own well-being.
They bring joy and companionship.
Yet
many animals are threatened with extinction due to the destruction of their
habitats, poaching and climate change.Education plays a key role in protecting
animals, as it helps to create a society that is more compassionate towards all
forms of life on Earth. Educational events are organised around the world to
inform people about issues such as protecting wildlife, combating animal
cruelty and conserving the environment.
Great
strides have been made around the world to ensure that animals are treated as
living beings in their own right. Unfortunately, much remains to be done.
That's why a key action is to provide information, because people are not
always aware or knowledgeable about endangered species and the causes of their
disappearance, the consequences for wildlife, climate change or the
environment.
The
role of animals in the ecosystem
Animals
play a fundamental role in the ecosystem, acting as essential pillars in
maintaining life on Earth.
Their
contribution to pollination enables many plants to reproduce, ensuring food
production and the diversity of plant species. By regulating harmful
populations, predatory animals preserve the natural balance and prevent
imbalances that can threaten crops and habitats.Their presence influences the
health of natural habitats, contributing to the stability of ecosystems in the
face of climate change. Protecting animals is not just a question of morality,
but a necessity to ensure the sustainability of the environment and our own
survival on this planet.
