In Togo, the elderly occupy an important place in society, and their well-being is taken into account through initiatives designed to promote their inclusion and improve their quality of life. Among these initiatives, the recreational days organised for the elderly are proving to be precious moments of sharing, joy and conviviality. Concerned about their development, the Personal Assistance Service at Home and in Hospitals of the NGO Volontaires Internationaux pour la Santé en Afrique (International Volunteers for Health in Africa) (SADH-VISA) organised a special recreation day for the elderly on Sunday 01 December 2024 in Lomé under the theme ‘Ma place’. The aim of the event was to help senior citizens to enjoy themselves, to develop and break with isolation, and above all to reflect on their role and importance in society.

This recreational day for the elderly is an essential event in the fight against social isolation and maintaining links with the community. It provided an opportunity for seniors to relax, enjoy themselves and meet new people, allowing them to get away from everyday life while maintaining their social ties.It was accompanied by music, dance, games and convivial meals. The idea is to create a warm atmosphere where seniors can chat, laugh and enjoy themselves together. These activities help to stimulate memory, maintain cognitive abilities and encourage interaction between seniors.

According to Rosalie Benthywa Johnson, Director of SADH-VISA, «We have noticed today that the elderly are often neglected and left to fend for themselves in some families. They feel a lack of social contact. They no longer have a place in families. They are accused of wrongdoing, sometimes witchcraft, sometimes illness. So we want to contribute to the moral and social support, health and well-being of senior citizens. We are creating an inclusive and respectful environment, in which every senior feels valued and listened to. We offer them these opportunities to meet new people and strengthen friendships, helping to create an emotional support network. »

For the elderly, these moments of conviviality are essential for their emotional well-being, as they help them to feel less alone and to maintain links with those around them.

The day was accompanied by advice on nutrition, health and falls prevention, all aimed at improving the quality of life of senior citizens.
