December 20, 2024, Togo's Ministry of Health and Public Hygiene published an
alarming communiqué concerning the increase in cases of indigestion and food
poisoning observed in health facilities after the end-of-year festivities.
These incidents are attributed to risky eating and driving habits, which are
often amplified during this period.
The
Ministry warns against overeating and inappropriate practices, particularly the
consumption of alcohol, spoiled or badly prepared food, and excessive use of
products rich in sugar, salt and oil. These behaviors can lead to serious
complications, such as diabetes, high blood pressure and diarrheal diseases.
To
prevent these risks during and after the festivities, the Ministry of Health is
reminding us of several essential preventive measures: rigorous food selection
and proper cooking before consumption; increased consumption of fresh,
carefully washed fruit and vegetables; moderate use of sugar, salt and oil to
avoid health complications; and regular hand washing with soap, a key measure
against cholera and diarrhoeal diseases.
Road
safety and healthy living
In
addition to dietary advice, the Ministry is calling for increased vigilance on
the roads.Respecting the highway code, avoiding drunk driving, limiting speed
and systematically wearing helmets for two-wheeled vehicles are among the top
priorities. Finally, the emphasis is on keeping the environment clean to
prevent vector-borne diseases such as malaria and dengue fever.
"Compliance
with these instructions is essential for a peaceful and convivial holiday
season, free of major incidents", says Pr Tchin Darre, Minister of Health and
Public Hygiene, wishing everyone a happy New Year 2025.
