Sweetened drinks such as cans should be consumed in moderation, as they are harmful to health. But according to a study by the French National Institute for Health and Medical Research (INSERM/France), consuming 33 centilitres a day puts the liver at risk. While 33cl of cans or energy drinks a day may not seem like a lot, the high sugar content in these beverages is already causing problems for the liver. Many Togolese drink them every day. They know that they promote obesity and diabetes, but they never think about the liver. Because eating too much fat and/or too much sugar can lead to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, or NASH, better known as human fatty liver disease. A condition that can lead to cirrhosis or cancer.

The body does not need so much sugar. As it is liquid, it is very easily assimilated by the intestine. It then goes to the liver, which converts the sugar into fat, and that's where the risk lies. The real problem is that 90% of people who drink cans and classic energy drinks every day also have a very unbalanced diet. Lack of physical activity, junk food, tobacco, alcohol and cans are all scourges for the liver, which may gradually suffer as a result.
