A significant amount of dead fish was discovered on Saturday, May 3, 2025, in the stormwater retention basin of Todman, in Lomé. Alerted, the teams of the Ministry of Health and Public Hygiene intervened quickly to remove the fish from the site and proceed with their incineration. The information was made public on Monday, May 5 through a government's press release.

In order to protect the population, a security cordon has been erected around the basin to prevent any attempt to recover these potentially dangerous fish for consumption. The government says an investigation is underway to determine the origin of this mortality. Monday

Samples were taken on site for toxicological and chemical analysis. The results will help identify the exact causes of this incident.

Pending the findings, health authorities call for vigilance. They warn against any risky consumption of fish of dubious origin, stressing the risks of toxic infections that can lead to vomiting, colic, diarrhea or poisoning.

The Government calls on the civic sense of the population and invites everyone to scrupulously respect the precautionary measures in order to avoid any critical health situation.
