On 7 May 2025, as a prelude to the Scientific Days of the Faculty of Health Sciences (FSS), the University of Lomé hosted a vast medical and surgical consultation campaign on its campus. This initiative, led by medical, pharmaceutical and paramedical students, with the support of their teachers and several health professionals, is taking place at two sites: the Lomé University Works Centre (COUL) and the FSS.
The
aim of this operation is to offer the university community and local residents
free medical consultations, targeted screening and awareness-raising
activities, in a spirit of prevention, solidarity and civic commitment.
The
campaign mobilises dozens of students at the end of their training, under the
supervision of practising doctors, to offer consultations in general medicine,
ophthalmology, dermatology, gynaecology, pneumology and rheumatology, among
others.Particular emphasis is placed on screening for hypertension and
diabetes, silent but increasingly widespread chronic diseases. In addition, free medicines are distributed.
‘This campaign is an opportunity to
apply our knowledge while serving the public. It's also a time for exchanging ideas,
raising awareness and empowering people. All the medical specialities are
represented to meet as many needs as possible’,
explains Sam-Sam Derpeng Liliane, a doctor of pneumology.
One
of the most high-profile aspects of this campaign is the blood donation stand.
Volunteers flock to the stand every day to make this simple but vital
gesture. This action is of vital importance in a university setting where
awareness-raising plays a key role.
‘In addition to the free consultations,
we wanted to include a blood donation campaign to give everyone the chance to
make a concrete civic gesture. Giving blood has the potential to save a life’,
explains Ruth Yaké, Doctor of Pharmacy and member of the organising committee.
Students give blood to save lives...
Every
day, many volunteers come forward to make this vital gesture. ‘I'm a mathematics student at the University
of Lomé. I volunteered to give blood here at the FSS, as part of the Scientific
Days. I think it's an excellent initiative: giving blood saves a life. And when
you need it yourself, there will be someone there for you. I invite all
students to do this’, said Defodji Dohato, visibly pleased with his
contribution.
Messan-Toutoum
Light Eméfa, a mathematics student at the Faculty of Science, says: ‘I came to give blood to save lives. As a
student, I think it's essential to take part in this show of solidarity. I
invite my fellow students to do the same.
This
fair campaign is part of an innovative teaching initiative. It enables future
healthcare professionals to develop their clinical skills in a practical,
interactive setting, while coming face to face with the diversity of medical
situations.
It
also marks the official launch of the Scientific Days of the Faculty of Health
Sciences, which from 14 to 16 May will bring together researchers,
professionals, students and institutions to discuss the challenges of public
health, medical research and therapeutic innovation. The campaign, which has
already recorded several hundred consultations since it was launched, will
continue until 9 May 2025 at the COUL, and then within the Faculty of Health
Sciences itself to accompany the start of the activities planned as part of the
FSS Scientific Days.
