Once
considered an epidemic associated with poverty, tuberculosis is gradually
declining in Togo. The country shows positive results thanks to a strict
national policy and the commitment of health personnel. Patients now benefit
from rapid and free treatment, while prevention and follow-up are intensified
in health facilities.
Early
detection campaigns are multiplying across the country, supported by free
treatment and enhanced psychological support. These joint efforts have achieved
a treatment success rate of 87% in 2022, with a target of 90% by 2027,
according to the National Tuberculosis Control Program (PNLT).
According
to the "Global TB Report", the incidence of tuberculosis dropped by
43% between 2015 and 2021, falling to 33 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
Government projections are for an impact of 25 cases by 2027, confirming the
strength of the national strategy.
A
decisive turning point has been initiated with the deployment of GeneXpert
machines, recommended by the WHO for rapid and reliable diagnosis. The number
of equipped sites increased from 14 in 2020 to 52 in 2024, reducing analysis
times from 72 to 24 hours. This technological progress has allowed the number
of cases detected to increase from 2,312 in 2020 to 3,129 in 2024.
Beyond
the numbers, Togo relies on a human and integrated approach: patients benefit
from psychosocial monitoring to strengthen adherence to treatments and prevent
relapses. This comprehensive strategy reflects the will of the authorities to
make health a pillar of sustainable development and to offer every citizen the
opportunity to heal with dignity.
Although
the total eradication of tuberculosis is an ambitious goal, Togo proves that
with political determination, medical advances and solidarity, one can reverse
the course of a disease feared for a long time.
