On
12 January 2026, Sena Agué, Executive Director of the Palliative Care Programme
at the Togolese Association for the Promotion of Health and Community
Development (ATPSDC), visited the Ében Ézer Medical and Social Centre in
Dzrékpo-Amégnran, in the municipality of Vo 3. This visit was part of his
mission to monitor and support partner organisations.
Initiated
on the instructions of Dr Amivi Baba, President of the ATPSDC, this visit was
both technical and supportive in nature. Its objectives were to carry out an
overall assessment of services, to provide post-training follow-up in
palliative care and to deliver consumables intended to improve patient care.
The
discussions, which were deemed fruitful and constructive, were held with the
head of the health facility, Komlan Agbevide, and with all the nursing staff.
The discussions focused mainly on the professional practices implemented
following the palliative care training organised from 16 to 20 December 2025.
The topics covered included pain assessment and management, psychosocial
support for patients and their families, and the adoption of a holistic
approach centred on respect for human dignity.
In
a context characterised by limited resources, the efforts made by healthcare
staff to integrate palliative care principles into their daily practice were
unanimously praised.
Aware
of the constraints faced by healthcare facilities, the ATPSDC donated a batch
of essential consumables including saline solutions, injectable painkillers,
infusion sets, syringes and antiseptics. This material support aims to
strengthen the centre's operational capacities and contribute to improving the
quality of care, particularly for patients requiring palliative care.
Post-training
follow-up has also revealed the positive impact of capacity building on
professional practices. Beyond pain relief, palliative care promotes a more
humane and holistic approach, integrating the physical, psychological, social
and spiritual dimensions of the patient. This dynamic, already underway at the
Ében Ézer Medical and Social Centre, needs to be consolidated and sustained
over time.
Through
this mission, ATPSDC reaffirms its commitment to providing ongoing support to
healthcare facilities, strengthening the skills of professionals and promoting
access to palliative care in Togo. The Ében Ézer Medical and Social Centre in
Dzrékpo remains a strategic partner in this collective effort to ensure that
every patient receives dignified, respectful care tailored to their needs.
This
initiative was made possible thanks to the support of a group of goodwill
individuals led by Serge Prince-Agbodjan, a trainer at the Berner
Bildungszentrum Pflege (BZ Pflege), who was visiting Togo as part of the
partnership between the National Association of Nurses of Togo (ANIIT) and the
Bern Nursing Training Institute (BZ Pflege).
