Red tomatoes are rich in lycopene, vitamins E, C and B9, minerals, phenolic compounds and fibre. This fruit-vegetable has been credited with possible effects in preventing prostate cancer. Lycopene is a molecule capable of neutralising or reducing the damage caused by free radicals in the body. Compared with a whole tomato, more lycopene is released when the tomato is processed, for example into purée, juice or soup. Cooking, crushing and preparing with vegetable oil, for example in a sauce, ensures better absorption of lycopene by the body.

According to a study conducted by British researchers at the universities of Bristol, Cambridge and Oxford, eating a good ten portions of tomatoes every week (i.e. the equivalent of 2 tomatoes a day) enables men to reduce their risk of prostate cancer by 20%. And what these gentlemen will surely appreciate is that the scientists claim that tomatoes are good for their prostate, whatever their form: in salads, soup, juice, purée or sauce, on home-made pizza. The risk of cancer could even be reduced by 25% if men applied the ‘five portions of fruit and vegetables a day’ principle.

Better quality sperm

According to British researchers, it is possible to increase the proportion of healthy spermatozoa and boost their speed by around 40%. All thanks to the compound that gives tomatoes their red colour. An attractive solution for men with fertility problems

Spectacular’ results were observed among those who regularly consumed tomatoes, including an improvement in the morphology, size and shape of spermatozoa. According to the researchers, lycopene is potentially capable of inhibiting the damage caused by sperm oxidation, a known cause of male fertility problems.

Prevent myocardial infarction

Drinking (unsalted) tomato juice regularly can reduce blood pressure and levels of unhealthy fats, thereby lowering the risk of cardiovascular disease. These are the findings of a study published in the journal Food Science & Nutrition.  According to researchers at Tokyo Medical and Dental University, by consuming tomato juice, patients suffering from hypertension or pre-hypertension can see their blood pressure fall significantly, without any treatment. Hypertension is one of the most common causes of cardiovascular disease, including angina pectoris, myocardial infarction and stroke. However, eating fruit and vegetables, including tomatoes, on a daily basis helps to keep the heart and circulatory system healthy.
