Iodine is an
essential trace element for the body. It is
involved in the synthesis of thyroid hormones and regulates the thyroid gland,
an endocrine gland located at the front and bottom of the neck. A
lack or deficiency of iodine can lead to a number of symptoms, including weight
gain, hypothyroidism and goitre.
There are three major
causes of iodine deficiency. The first is dietary deficiency, the second is
distance from the sea, so people who live far from the coast need to be more
vigilant than those who live by the sea. Finally, there are hormonal disorders,
meaning that some people's bodies are unable to assimilate iodine.
Consequences of iodine
deficiency
Iodine deficiency can lead
to hypothyroidism, which is an enlargement of the thyroid gland. Because it is
large, the thyroid becomes hypoactive and less functional. It is no longer
capable of properly synthesising the thyroid hormones responsible for regulating
weight, mood, body temperature and heart rate. In addition, iodine deficiency
in pregnant women increases the risk of miscarriage and congenital
malformation.
The symptoms
The warning signs of iodine
deficiency include weight gain, dry or scaly skin, sleep problems, hair loss,
slower mental performance and goitre when iodine deficiency is severe. This
deficiency can also lead to reduced fertility, disruption of the cardiac system
and constipation.
Treatment
There is no medication to
treat iodine deficiency. To increase iodine levels, you need to eat more
iodine-rich foods: fish, prawns, crabs, mussels, oysters, fruit and vegetables.
Opt for iodised salt in your diet.
